Chisolm Trail Road reopens following closure related to Heritage Trail West construction

Good news for Round Rock residents and commuters: Chisholm Trail Road, which has been closed for construction related to the Heritage Trail West project, is now open again.

The closure, which began just south of the Sunset Drive intersection and extended north of RM 620, was initially expected to last approximately 90 days. However, the project encountered unforeseen utility conflicts, leading to an extended closure through Dec. 15. This extended duration allowed crews to safely work on underground utilities and construct a pedestrian bridge, integral components of the Heritage Trail West project.

The design of the bridge serves as a link between generations of Round Rock residents. Originally used for wagons to cross in the 1800s, the bridge will continue to play an important role in the City’s development as part of the new Heritage Trail project. Visitors will be able to safely view the “round rock” from viewing platforms on the bridge and will have a more safe way to cross Chisholm Trail Road and Brushy Creek as a result of the project.

The Heritage Trail West project will complete an approximately 1-mile section of trail from just west of Chisholm Trail Road to Mays Street. This project also includes an overlook along Brushy Creek, improvements to several parks and the inclusion of historical and recreational elements. The goal is to create a connected, accessible and informative space for residents and visitors alike, highlighting the history of Round Rock and providing new recreational opportunities. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2024.

The City of Round Rock was recently granted $6.3 million for Heritage Trail improvements by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) through a program aiming to fund a variety of bicycle and pedestrian planning and infrastructure projects throughout the state.

Construction of Lake Creek Trail also began this year, following voter approval of the May 2023 G.O. Bonds. The completed trail will include a 10-foot-wide path running from Round Rock West Park to Centennial Plaza, pedestrian underpass at IH-35, a bridge over Lake Creek and other amenities along the trail.
