Signage installed on Heritage Trail West pedestrian bridge

The new Heritage Trail West boasts new signage on its iconic new bridge structure as the project nears its completion, expected by summer 2024.

The Heritage Trail West project will complete an approximately 1-mile section of trail along the Brushy Creek Regional Trail, running from just west of Chisholm Trail Road to Mays Street. The trail will connect Round Rock’s original pioneer settlement, “Old Town,” and its railroad-era “New Town,” which is considered Downtown Round Rock today. A park along the trail in Old Town near The Round Rock includes the recently relocated 1850’s Stagecoach Inn.

This project also includes an overlook along Brushy Creek, improvements to several parks and the inclusion of historical and recreational elements. The goal is to create a connected, accessible and informative space for residents and visitors alike, highlighting the history of Round Rock and providing new recreational opportunities.

The design of the bridge located along Chisholm Trail Road serves as a link between generations of Round Rock residents. A similar bridge structure was in place at this same location in the 1800s for wagons, etc., to safely traverse the low water crossing. Visitors will be able to safely view the city’s namesake “round rock” from viewing platforms on the bridge and will have a more safe way to cross Chisholm Trail Road and Brushy Creek as a result of the project.

Significant progress is also being made to portions of the trail east of IH-35, including work to construct creek overlooks, gathering spaces near Memorial Park and a massive spiral trail ramp.

Construction of Lake Creek Trail is also ongoing following voter approval of the May 2023 G.O. Bonds. The completed trail will include a 10-foot-wide path running from Round Rock West Park to Centennial Plaza, pedestrian underpass at IH-35, a bridge over Lake Creek and other amenities along the trail.
