New lane addresses bottleneck along southbound I-35

Published on October 13, 2023 under RRnews

Traffic is now flowing more efficiently along southbound I-35 through Round Rock. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) recently added a new entrance and exit lane near RM 620 to address one of the most congested segments of I-35 in Texas.

TxDOT added the extended entrance and exit lane to eliminate potential merging issues between US 79 and SH 45 North, while addressing congestion and improving safety. Other operational upgrades were made along the corridor, including the installation of wrong-way detection systems at various entrance and exit ramps and high-mast lighting.

“If you’ve driven on this section of I-35, you know it backs up at all hours of the day,” said TxDOT Austin District Engineer Tucker Ferguson. “This project addresses merging conflicts, while mitigating congestion and improving safety and mobility along this portion of the highway in Williamson County.”

The $8.4 million project was funded by TxDOT and Texas Clear Lanes, and was officially completed in September.
