Lieutenant Sloan named to international list of emerging leaders in law enforcement

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) has selected Round Rock Police Lieutenant Tom Sloan as one of its annual 40 Under 40 Award recipients. The award recognizes law enforcement professionals under the age of 40 from around the world who demonstrate leadership and exemplify commitment to their profession.

Lt. Sloan has been with the Department since 2008 and he currently oversees the SWAT Team and three units within our Criminal Investigations Division. When he was a Sergeant in the Traffic Unit, he starred in the award-winning Tom’s Traffic Tips video series which informed citizens on a variety of traffic laws and issues over 30 episodes.

“I am incredibly honored to be recognized with this prestigious award,” said Lt. Sloan. “I must reflect the credit on the amazing agency that is the Round Rock Police Department. If not for the exceptional leadership, and their support, I would not have been in the position to launch new ideas to solve old problems. I am moved and very grateful.”

The winners will be recognized on Sept. 14 during the online IACP 2021 Annual Conference and featured in the September issue of Police Chief magazine. In August, Lt. Sloan presented on traffic safety and public education at the IACP Training Conference on Drugs, Alcohol, and Impaired Driving in Orlando.

Lt. Sloan is one of two Texans on the list. Previous Round Rock Police Department recipients include former Public Information Specialist Angelique Myers in 2017 and former Operations Support Manager Becky Rodriguez in 2016.

“It is an honor for the Round Rock Police Department to be acknowledged alongside law enforcement agencies from around the world,” said Chief Allen Banks. “We aspire to be a department others look to as a model of what’s right in policing, and Lieutenant Tom Sloan helps us maintain that reputation. We are grateful for his leadership and innovative programs.”
