Council purchases land for road projects near University Blvd.

Round Rock City Council approved the purchase of right-of-way Thursday that will improve traffic flows in the area of the University Oaks Shopping Center.

The purchase of approximately .57 acres of right-of-way along University Oaks Boulevard from IA Round Rock University Oaks Limited Partnership will allow the City to reconfigure the intersection located just south of University Boulevard in the University Oaks Shopping Center. The current three-way stop located east of IKEA will be reconfigured — including the removal of the stop signs — for more controlled movements coming in and out of the shopping center, preventing congestion backing up to University Boulevard.

Another purchase of .01 acres of land will pave the way for construction of a connection between Oakmont Drive and the east side of the shopping center.

These projects will occur simultaneously with the University Boulevard widening project, which will create a six-lane, median-divided arterial with dual turn lanes at the intersections of Oakmont Drive and University Oaks Boulevard. Construction is anticipated to begin later this year and last approximately two years.

The University Boulevard project, combined with Williamson County’s extension of North Mays Street Extension that is expected to connect to Oakmont Drive later this year, will contribute to relief of congestion in the area by providing more connectivity for drivers. This is part of the City of Round Rock’s overall goal to provide drivers with more local options other than IH-35 to travel through town.
