Council approves University Boulevard construction contract

Published on January 14, 2021 under RRnews

Round Rock City Council approved a contract at its Jan. 14 meeting that will widen University Boulevard from A.W. Grimes Boulevard to SH 130.

The $11.1 million contract with J.D. Abrams, LP will expand the roadway from two to four lanes and will add a raised median and left-turn lanes. Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2020 and conclude in late 2021.

The City secured $7.56 million in federal funding for the project through the Surface Transportation Block Grant Program which is offered through the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (CAMPO) yearly grant program.

The project is a continuation of the City’s commitment to improving the entire length of University Boulevard.

The expansion of University Boulevard from the North IH-35 frontage road to Sunrise Boulevard is already under way. Construction began in late 2020 and is expected to ramp up in the coming months and conclude in 2023. This portion of University Boulevard will be widened to a six-lane, median-divided urban arterial road. Dual-turn lanes at Oakmont Drive and University Oaks will also be constructed.

Both projects are a part of the City’s five-year, $240 million Driving Progress transportation plan that aims to improve roadway capacity and connectivity throughout the City.
