Council approves construction for quiet zones

Published on March 9, 2017 under RRnews

Progress is on track as the City of Round Rock works with Union Pacific Railroad (UP) to restrict trains from blowing their horns inside the City limits.

The City Council has approved construction contracts for the first phase of the project and construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in November, said Gary Hudder, Transportation Services Director.

Construction involves both City and UP work at street and railroad crossing intersections. Motorists are prevented from driving around lowered crossing arms by installing four arms instead of the typical two, or properly constructing medians that restrict cross access. The red flashing lights would trigger even sooner than at a typical rail crossing.

Once construction is complete, the Federal Railroad Administration will need to certify the City as a quiet zone.

After the quiet zones are installed, train engineers can still blow their horn if they believe it is necessary.

First phase of the project will run from County Road 172 to Burnet Road; second phase will run from Burnet Road to Red Bud Lane.
