Published on June 15, 2023 under RRnews

The City of Round Rock won 10 statewide awards for the organization’s communication efforts, including seven first place awards and three second place awards, last week at the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers (TAMIO) conference, which took place at Live! by Loews in Arlington last week.

The first place TAMI awards received include:

  1. Best Planned Social Media Campaign (Population over 75,000): The Next Chapter: Round Rock Builds a New Public Library – Round Rock flipped the page to a new chapter with the opening of the new Round Rock Public Library, and the Communication and Marketing Department led a robust social media campaign leading up to the grand opening event. The campaign garnered 1.2 million impressions and over 132,000 engagements across Facebook and Instagram and helped get 7,400 people to the new facility’s opening day bash.
  2. Crisis Communications Response: Tornado Response – This award acknowledged the Communication and Marketing Department’s approach to build community during following the March 2022 tornado that caused $32 million in damage and affected 680 homes. The communications team was able to harness visual storytelling to give the community information about the City’s response while first responders coordinated efforts to help impacted residents.
  3. Best Educational PSA Video (Population between 75,000-150,000): From Vision to Reality – FY23 Budget Video – Round Rock’s most recent budget video featured a unique spokesperson to educate residents on their budget and tax rate. Barbie brought the engagement, but judges were especially impressed by the informational value of the video.
  4. Best Use of Photography (Population over 50,000): Fourth of July celebrations – The department’s captivating photography capturing the spirit and diversity of the community through the lens of Round Rock’s July 4 celebrations was applauded for its creativity, composition and ability to capture the essence of community events.
  5. Best Regular or Recurring Video Series (Population over 100,000): Places in Time – The Communication and Marketing Department’s Places in Time video series was honored for its outstanding storytelling and visual appeal. The series takes viewers on a journey through Round Rock’s rich history and iconic landmarks to honor places of interest and historical importance that helped shape the city into what it is today.
  6. Best Issue-Specific Website: Downtownroundrocktexas.com – The redesigned Downtown Round Rock website improved the user experience through streamlined navigation, a mobile-friendly framework and a visual identity that’s more in line with the area’s charming brand.
  7. Internal Communications: Nick Does It – This award recognized the Round Rock Police Departments’ internal communication efforts through the Nick Does It video series, which showcased officer training through the eyes of a civilian employee. The segment highlighted the high level of training and skills possessed by Round Rock officers.

In addition to the first place awards, the department also received three second place awards, including:

  1. Best Use of Short-Form Video: Instagram Reels – The department’s creative and engaging short-form videos on Instagram Reels caught the attention of the judges and received recognition for their entertainment value and ability to effectively convey messages.
  2. Special/One Time Video: Tornado Response – This award acknowledges the City of Round Rock’s recap video of the March 2022 tornado, highlighting how the city came together to take care of their neighbors.
  3. Best Unplanned Social Media Campaign: Tornado Response – The Communication and Marketing Department’s social media efforts during the March 2022 tornado and aftermath were commended for its visual storytelling and timely updates.

“These awards are a reflection of the City of Round Rock’s dedication, creativity, and commitment to providing informative and engaging communications,” said Sara Bustilloz, Director of Communications and Marketing. “I’m proud of our team’s ability to adapt to the evolving communications landscape while producing content that our residents find useful and valuable.”
