City Council approves increase in residential trash fees on first reading

Published on October 12, 2023 under RRnews

The Round Rock City Council approved on first reading Thursday, Oct. 12, a 5% increase in the monthly fee charged to customers for trash and recycling services.

The new rates would go into effect following Council approval on a second reading, which is expected to be held on Oct. 26.

Residential customer fees would increase from $22.14 to $23.08 per month for weekly trash and bi-weekly recycling pickup as a result of the proposed increase.

The fee change is needed to cover inflated costs incurred by Central Texas Refuse, the City’s service provider, based on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index Rate for all Urban Customers, Garbage and Trash Collection. The total rate includes a $3.10 fee for administrative services provided by the City, which covers the following benefits for customers:

  • Weekly garbage collection and single-stream curbside recycling every other week.
  • Up to seven additional items curbside for regular pickup (including bundled brush and bagged leaves).
  • Services at the City Recycling Center, 310 Deepwood Drive, including free mulch, free household chemicals and paint from recycling events, and drop-off for items that cannot be recycled.
  • Shred for a Paws Cause event in March for secure document shredding.
  • Household Hazardous Waste Collection on the first Wednesday of every month from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. (except holidays).
  • Spring Clean Up, which consists of scheduled days for curbside pickup of furniture and bulk items in April.

The proposal also includes a 5% increase to all Downtown Commercial District and Commercial Services Rates.
