Salvation Army aims to send 125 homeless, impoverished local children to summer camp
For the hundreds of children experiencing homelessness in the Austin area, attending summer camp is probably not an option due to financial constraints. The Salvation Army hopes to change that through a donation drive aimed at sending 125 homeless and impoverished Austin-area children to summer camps from June 13 through mid-August. Jan Gunter, communications and community relations director for the Salvation Army Austin, said there are and estimated 80-100 children at Austin-area Salvation Army shelters on any given day and an additional 400-550 women and children on a waiting list to get into the shelters.
