Round Rock gains momentum as tourism destination

Published on May 4, 2018 under RRnews

The Sports Capital of Texas continues to turn heads as a destination for travelers!

Round Rock was recently featured in the Texas Standard and Texas Lifestyle Magazine’s Travel Issue for attracting exciting new businesses, including the Nutty Brown Amphitheater, Kalahari Resort and Ruby Hotel. Existing hot spots for locals and visitors alike also received mention, including Dell Diamond, historic Chisholm Trail, vibrant Main Street in downtown and destination shopping experiences such as IKEA.

Tourism continues to be an important component of the City’s overall economic development strategy. According to the City’s most recent Popular Annual Financial Report, Round Rock businesses have seen continued growth in revenues, especially in the hotel and restaurant industries. At the end of the last fiscal year, 30 hotels with 3,000 rooms were open for business maintaining solid occupancy rates of 77.1 percent. Visitors to these hotels generate hotel occupancy tax revenues, which support local tourism events and debt service for the Dell Diamond and the Round Rock Sports Center. Visitors also contribute to the City’s budget through sales tax when they eat, shop and do business in Round Rock.

Round Rock has recently ventured into the convention and resort business, which will provide substantial property tax revenues and diversify the local economy. Kalahari Resorts and Convention Center has plans to break ground on May 15 and will feature a minimum of 975 guest rooms, a 150,000 square-foot convention center, a 200,000 square-foot indoor/outdoor water park, and other indoor and outdoor activities. Its 352-acre site and proximity to Old Settlers Park and the Dell Diamond — two well-established venues that draw more than a million visitors annually — bodes well for a successful, tourism-oriented development.

The Hilton Tru Hotel is currently under construction and will add 98 new rooms on Chisholm Trail near the Sports Center. The upscale Ruby Hotel along Brushy Creek plans to open during the first quarter of 2019 in downtown, with 39 guest rooms and sweeping views of the creek. Embassy Suites is currently building a160-room hotel with convention and meeting space near the Bass Pro Shops and Round Rock Premium Outlets.

From soccer tournaments to cycling events, Round Rock is well-known as a premier destination for youth sports and recreational activities. Great facilities, fun activities, plenty of dining and lodging, and a central location within two and a half hours from 90 percent of the state’s population are what truly makes Round Rock the Sports Capital of Texas.
