Police Chief Allen Banks wins national civil rights award

The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) has awarded the Civil Rights Justice by Action Award to Round Rock Police Department Chief Allen Banks.

The award is presented to an individual or team that has implemented positive strides in addressing racial discrimination or bias-based policing in the law enforcement community. Chief Banks was selected for the Police Department’s implementation of cultural diversity initiatives throughout the community. Programs include integration events with the Islamic Center, and partnerships with local churches and international organizations.

The honor was presented to Chief Banks during NOBLE’s 40th Anniversary Training Conference and Exhibition on July 17 in Washington, D.C. Round Rock City Manager Laurie Hadley also attended the ceremony.

In the past, NOBLE has bestowed awards posthumously to iconic civil rights leaders Dr. Dorothy Height and Dr. Benjamin Hooks, as well as legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. Recent winners include “Little Rock Nine,” who braved picket lines in the 1950s to desegregate schools in Little Rock, Ark., and Dr. Jocelynn Elders, former U.S. Surgeon General. This year radio personality and activist Joe Madison was the keynote speaker and Reverend Jessie Jackson was an honored guest during the program.
