Open enrollment for Junior Police Academy starts March 7

Published on February 17, 2016 under RRnews

Round Rock’s youth get a real taste of police work during the Round Rock Police Department’s Junior Police Academy (JPA). The camp is designed to strengthen the connections between law enforcement and local youth giving them a chance to see what it’s like to be a police officer over their summer vacation. Applications will be accepted online via the City of Round Rock website beginning March 7. Priority is given to first-time participants.

Geared to kids from 8 to 16 years old, the camp is conducted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday thru Thursday and 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Friday at the police department. School Resource Officers lead the JPA which is free and open to all Round Rock residents, and students who attend school in Round Rock.

The academy’s curriculum includes traffic safety, criminal investigations, alcohol and drug use, hand-cuffing, and self-defense. Students also get a first-hand look inside Patrol and SWAT vehicles, K-9 units, and a police helicopter. Field trips are also taken throughout the Central Texas area. A graduation ceremony at the end of the week acknowledges their endurance and hard work.

The non-profit organization is seeking donations and sponsorship. For information call 512-218-5500, or email [email protected].
