Hutto Mayor Pro Tem Michael Smith resigns

Amid reports he owed taxes for former businesses to the city of Hutto, where he served as mayor pro tem, Michael Smith submitted his resignation, the city announced at noon Monday. A release from the city said Mayor Doug Gaul was made aware Thursday of the allegations that Smith had past due taxes. The past due taxes were the focus of a story first reported last week by KXAN-TV in Austin. According to the city charter, the money owed made Smith ineligible to serve as a council member. He was running for re-election in the May 6 election.
