City’s May election postponed to later date

Published on April 9, 2020 under RRnews

The Round Rock City Council voted to postpone May elections until Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the latest, due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Councilmembers made clear their desire to seek an election date earlier than Nov. 3 to avoid having local races at the bottom of a lengthy ballot in a national and state election.

City Council made the decision at its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, April 9. The postponement was made possible by a proclamation Texas Gov. Greg Abbott made last month suspending Section 41.0052(a) and (b) of the Texas Election Code to allow cities and other government entities that planned to hold elections on May 2 to move their general and special elections to Nov. 3. Mayor Craig Morgan said he would like to see Gov. Abbott issue a second proclamation allowing for another election date after May 2 and before Nov. 3.

The ballot will include three City Council seats and seven proposed amendments to the City Charter. Voters will cast ballots for Mayor, Place 1 and Place 4 on the City Council. Mayor Morgan will run unopposed. Michelle Ly and Tina Steiner are running for Place 1. Current Place 1 Councilmember Tammy Young is not seeking re-election. Place 4 Councilmember Will Peckham is seeking re-election. He will be challenged by Frank Ortega.

A Charter Review Commission met last year to review the City Charter and submit suggested amendments to the City Council, which finalized a slate of proposed amendments for voter approval.

The candidate filing period for the election will not be re-opened.

Deadlines for a Nov. 3 election are as follows:

  • Voter Registration Deadline: Oct. 5, 2020
  • Deadline to submit an Application for Ballot by Mail: Oct. 23, 2020
  • Dates for Early Voting: Oct. 19, 2020 – Oct. 30, 2020
