Austin sales tax revenue down 1.57 percent in April 2017, surrounding Central Texas cities up 5-16 percent

April’s sales tax revenue report, released in June by Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar, shows city of Austin sales tax revenue decreased 1.57 percent from April 2016, whereas cities in the greater Austin area have seen significant growth. Hutto saw the greatest increase at 16.44 percent from last year, followed closely by Leander and Round Rock. Sales tax revenue is directly proportional to consumer spending, meaning that the decline in sales tax revenue in Austin signals a decline in consumer participation in the economy.
