Applications being accepted for 33rd Citizen’s Police Academy

Published on August 11, 2016 under RRnews

The Round Rock Police Department is conducting open enrollment for the 33rd Citizen’s Police Academy, a 10-week educational opportunity that gives participants a behind the scenes look at the many functions of the police department.

The Citizens Police Academy is a hands-on course where participants will: drive a police car in an obstacle course; go to a shooting range; use Laser Shot simulators with virtual targeting; and also have the chance to ride out with patrol officers during a shift. Citizens will meet officers from every division: Animal Control, K9 Unit, Training and Recruiting, Dispatch, SWAT, Hostage Negotiations, Crime Scene, Evidence, Patrol, School Resource Program, Criminal Investigations and more.

“Every person who participates says it is truly an eye-opening experience and they walk away with a better understanding of all aspects of law enforcement,” said Officer Joseph Claypool, who leads the Academy.

Classes are held from 7 to 10 p.m. Tuesday nights at the department, 2701 N. Mays St. The course concludes with a graduation ceremony and dinner.

Space is limited and the maximum class size is 35. A background check and clear driving record are required to enroll in the program. Opening Ceremonies are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 13.

For more information call 512-671-2871 or download the application.
